Therefore, if you rely on your bar prep course to teach you how to draft high-scoring answers…you leave serious points on the table.

THE #1 MISTAKE STRUGGLING BAR EXAM TAKERS MAKE

Struggling bar exam takers focus on the wrong things during bar prep. They waste weeks of bar prep time trying to improve their accuracy rate on the MBE. Focusing on the MEE/MPT is a better strategy because the questions are more PREDICTABLE than they are on the MBE. And you have more control over your score since it's not graded by a computer.

When you say “YES” to doing thousands of MBE questions, you say “NO” to doing the things that will actually help you pass such as learning how to draft high-scoring MEE/MPT answers. Yes, practicing MBE questions is important but not if it’s at the expense of doing the things that will get you a passing score.

Or worse! Mistake #2

You ASSUME your bar prep course and other bar prep resources are going to TEACH you what you need to know to pass the bar exam. Problem is, they assume you LEARNED in law school what you need to know to pass the bar exam.

What happens when you managed to graduate from law school but for whatever reason you don't understand the rules as well as is required for the bar exam?

Remember, bar prep courses are a REVIEW. They are not law school all over again. Therefore, having the wrong expectations about your bar prep course leaves you with the same surface-level understanding of the rules. Sometimes, what you need is more than a review.

And we all know what happens when you walk into the bar exam with a shallow understanding of the rules.

The bar exam is a big undertaking but it’s doable when you don't walk into the bar exam with a surface-level understanding of the rules because you had unrealistic expectations about what your bar prep course would do for you.

Mistake #3

Lastly, many struggling bar exam takers don't give the written portion the attention and respect it deserves. Before you know it, it's six days before the bar exam and you've only read model answers. Since you did ok on law school finals, you think you can get away with only reading model answers, outlining answers, or writing out a few MEE/MPT's under timed conditions.

But the reality is that if you want to leverage the written portion to your advantage on the bar exam, you must up-level your current IRAC’ing skills.

Not to mention that only reading model answers is like being an Olympic swimmer who only trains in a kiddie or regular-sized pool before the big day. It doesn’t work! You must practice in an Olympic-sized swimming pool because this is where you improve your stroke and your time.

Without a proven formula to follow, you end up answering essays and performance tests intuitively on bar exam day. Your answers are more a stream of consciousness than concise.

Drafting high-scoring MEE and MPT answers is the most effective way to go from a struggling bar exam taker to a licensed attorney.

How else do you expect to pass the bar exam if you can’t get an MBE score in the 150’s or 160’s?

But if you only read model answers or outline answers in the days before the bar exam, you never learn to draft high-scoring answers.

What happens when you are forced to draft a high-scoring answer on bar exam day under timed conditions and pressure? What happens when you don’t know how to analyze the facts presented?

What happens when you get low scores on each essay and performance test? It’s back to square one…minus the time, effort, and money you already put in.
